As with any choice in life cloth diapering has its pros and cons. When I thought of cloth diapers I pictured a baby wrapped in a rag with a huge pin on the front. I think this is the image many people still have when they hear cloth diapers.
Cloth diapers have made a HUGE transformation in recent years; some might call it a “glow up”. The new design is not only cute but those handy snaps are much less terrifying than a huge pin you’re afraid to stab your baby with.
I’m going to tell you about some of the pros and cons I considered when deciding to use cloth diapers.
There are lots of pros but if I’m being honest the main one for me was it saves you money! Of course, how much money you save depends on many factors including how many you buy, what kind you buy, and for how many kids you use them. There are also costs included in cloth diapering that you might not think about at the beginning such as detergent to wash them. It is calculated that cloth diapering saves you an average of $600 USD on baby number one and goes up to $1300 if you use the same stash with baby number two. (Source)
This may not be one of the tops pros for most people but it definitely was for me! They are super cute! I mean, seriously adorable. They come in so many colors with so many patterns.
I figured this out after using cloth diapers for a while, once you get the hang of getting them fitted and snapped blowouts are a thing of the past! When the waist and leg elastics are properly fitted it keeps those crazy breastmilk poop explosions so nicely contained.
Pro number 3, cloth diapers are healthier for the baby. Mikayla has sensitive skin and is prone to rashes and MOST disposable diapers are full of harmful chemicals. Of course, we can’t have a blog post about cloth diapers without mentioning that they are better for the environment. I have heard that cloth diapering also promotes earlier potty training. I don’t know this yet personally but I will keep you updated!
Many articles I read when thinking by about cloth diapering just listed all the pros like it was the best thing in the world. They are fun and have lots of pros but can you make them work for you? Because let's be real, there are cons, STINKY stinky cons.
While (poo) blowouts are rarely an issue, leaks are frequent. Since cloth diapers are not filled with absorbent chemicals they need to be changed more often and if the elastic is not secured you will get leaks.
Clothes don’t fit for as long, because of so much fluff butt you regularly have to size up.
A big con for me was it is hard to go places with, you need wet bags and places to wash them, and they take up a lot of space when trying to travel light. Unless you have hand-me-downs or are gifted cloth diapers it is a bigger cost upfront and this can be a big con with all of the other expenses you have with a new baby. A tip is to specifically ask for cloth diapers for baby shower gifts, they are not a “normal” baby shower gift but I got several cloth diapers off my registry. The extra laundry, I know this is the deal-breaker for lots of people, and with a new baby, you already have a lot of extra laundry.
Cloth diapering does not have to be all or nothing. Choosing to use cloth diapers does not mean you are swearing off disposables for all of eternity and taking a break from cloth diapers does not mean that you lose the benefits. I sometimes use disposable diapers when traveling because bulky cloth diapers are inconvenient. I also used disposables when thrush turned into a yeast diaper rash and we had to sterilize all the diapers to make sure she didn’t re-catch the yeast infection from the diapers.
Even if you don’t use cloth diapers all the time you are still saving money and reducing the impact of disposable diapers on the environment.
Ese trasero pañaludo de tela: pros y contras
Al igual que con cualquier elección en la vida, los pañales de tela tienen sus pros y sus contras. Cuando solía pensar en pañales de tela, me imaginé a un bebé envuelto en un trapo con un alfiler enorme en el frente. Creo que es el imagen muchos tienen al escuchar de pañales de tela.

Por supuesto, no podemos publicar un blog sobre los pañales ecológicos sin mencionar que son mejores para el medio ambiente.
He oído que el cambio de pañales de tela también promueve un aprendizaje más temprano para ir al baño solos. No lo sé personalmente todavía, ¡pero los mantendré informados!
Muchos artículos que leí cuando pensaba en el cambio de pañales ecológicos simplemente enumeraban a todos los pros como si fuera lo mejor del mundo. Son divertidos y tienen muchas ventajas, pero ¿puedes hacer que funcionen para ti? Porque seamos realistas, hay contras, contras muy muy apestosos.

La ropa no le queda por tanto tiempo, debido a la gran cantidad de tela esponjoso en el trasero tendrás que usar ropita de una talla mas grande. Una gran desventaja para mí fue que es difícil ir a lugares, necesitas “wet bags” y un lugar para lavarlas, y ocupan mucho espacio cuando se trata de viajar sin mucho equipaje. A menos que tenga pañales de tela usados o regalados, el costo inicial es mayor y esto puede ser una gran desventaja con todos los demás gastos que inevitablemente hay con un nuevo bebé. Un consejo es pedir específicamente pañales de tela para regalos de baby shower, no son un regalo de baby shower “normal” pero tengo varios pañales ecológicos que compraron de mi registro en Amazon. Lo extra que tendrás que lavar, sé que esto es un factor decisivo para muchas personas, y con un nuevo bebé, ya tienes mucha ropa extra y agregando tener que lavar pañales si implica mas tiempo.
El usar pañales ecológicos no tiene por qué ser todo o nada. La elección de usar pañales de tela no significa que esté renunciando a los desechables por toda la eternidad y tomar un descanso de los pañales de tela no significa que pierda los beneficios. A veces uso pañales desechables cuando viajo porque los pañales de tela gordos simplemente son inconvenientes. También usé desechables cuando la muguet bocal se convirtió en una dermatitis del pañal causada por hongos y tuvimos que esterilizar todos los pañales para asegurarnos de que no se contagiara de la candidiasis de los pañales. Incluso si no usas pañales de tela todo el tiempo, todavía está ahorrando dinero y reduciendo el impacto de los pañales desechables en el medio ambiente.
